Michael: High School and First Mattress

Michael  •  Malawi

When he was nine, Michael’s mother died from malaria; when he was eleven, his father died of sepsis from an untreated wound.

Michael was alone without any support. His extended family tried to help but only had money to pay for his schooling sometimes. Most of the time, he couldn’t go. His parents could never access education or medical care and lost their lives. He was on the same path.

ON THE RISE

When Michael arrived at our partner in Malawi, he received consistent access to school and a home- no matter what. He’d never had his own mattress before, and it took him a little while to get used to sleeping in a bed. Regular meals were welcome, and so was being free from worry that he might have to leave school at any moment.

Michael was able to find his rhythm and keep up with his peers. He developed momentum. Now, he has the freedom to dream about his future.

Michael hopes to research cures for diseases like the ones his parents had. He wants to help save lives so that families can stay together. As he looks towards graduating secondary school, Michael is on his way to his own career- but first, he’ll finish eighth grade.

You are making it possible for Michael to be in school. Because of you he will be able to help others.
